Announcing the Third WXR Accelerator Cohort

in Partnership with Verizon 5G Labs!

The advent of the third WXR accelerator cohort comes with two exciting additions to the program: AI startups and Verizon 5G Labs!

To more fully represent the next wave of computing, we are also welcoming companies building products using artificial intelligence in addition to the original focus on AR/VR companies. We’ll be sharing more details about that decision in the weeks to come, and we look forward to the richness that AI startups will bring to the WXR community.

We are also happy to announce a partnership with Verizon 5G Labs as a supporter of the accelerator. 5G will vastly increase the power of immersive and data intensive technology— as we explored in an event at 5G Labs New York this spring. Our team is collaborating with Verizon to create programming relevant to XR and AI companies at the dawn of 5G. Participating companies will also have access to Verizon 5G Lab spaces around the country and mentorship from Verizon leaders.

PAST WXR COHORTS

In the beginning of 2018 we launched the beta version of the WXR Accelerator, and over the course of the past year have hosted two cohorts comprised of sixteen female founders. These are strong founders building companies leveraging spatial computing technology (VR/AR/XR), across a variety of sectors—  from education to healthcare to retail to training.

We are thrilled with the successes of the teams from the first two cohorts. Over the course of the accelerator they pitched VCs, participated in content series with industry leaders, and worked with their curated WXR mentors to hone their business models and continue evolving as strong leaders. The female founders of these companies are tenacious, creative, and their visions for their products continue to make us optimistic about what the next wave of computing will bring.

The WXR Fund has been instrumental in our fundraising efforts: from getting us introduced to key people, opportunities to practice our pitches, as well as key strategic advice that has saved me a lot of time and makes each on of my investor connections that much more effective.” —Angela Robert, Cofounder & CEO, Conquer Experience, WXR Accelerator alumnus

What WXR is doing is deeply impactful, especially for founders like me, who don’t look like traditional founders, who don’t build companies like traditional founders. They have built a network of support.”  —Arjita Sethi, Cofounder, Equally, WXR Accelerator alumnus

HOW IT ALL STARTED

A bit of history: the WXR accelerator was born in 2017 with the vision of supporting women in XR. Although nascent, the immersive tech industry was already following in the unequal footsteps of more established industries. Despite differences in focus, XR’s female founders shared a few challenges: access to investment, mentors, and corporate partners.

Within weeks of announcing the first cohort of our beta accelerator in 2017, we received hundreds of applications from a variety of industries, sizes, and stages.

Simultaneously, we put out a call for mentors to volunteer their time to share their expertise and guide our WXR startup founders. Hundreds of applicants from top companies such as Google, Microsoft, Magic Leap, Facebook, Warner Brothers, and more applied to participate as mentors to the cohort.

We curated the mentor and founder matches for a 10-week long mentorship program, and some even continue to work together today. The initial cohort kicked off with a virtual pitch showcase— making history as one of the first-ever investing themed events held in a social VR space.

We will be inviting up to 10 companies to join the program this fall. If you’re an early stage startup working in VR/AR and/or AI and you have at least one woman founder or significant female ownership, we would love to see your application in the mix!
